Wool separates are the perfect way to look bright - but feel warm

As life shows signs of returning to normal, it's time for our wardrobes to spring back into action, too. After all, we've got a lot of catching up to do with friends and family in bars and restaurants from Monday (no more shivering outside, thank goodness).

The focus now is on fine-tuning our outfits to feel bright and breezy for a British summer, without leaving us shivering every time the sun disappears behind a cloud.

It's still too chilly for summer dresses and sandals, so what's the answer for this inbetweeny weather? Spring knitwear: knits that are less bulky than winter woolies.

And we're not just talking cardigans and jumpers - although, if you're in the market, Boden still reigns supreme for quality knits that won't max out your credit card, such as its cream jumper.

This season's knitwear encompasses skirts, dresses, even off-the-shoulder tops. Just keep the palette light - pretty pastels cut with flashes of white and pops of brighter shades.

Mango has a great choice of fine knits. Its pleated midi skirt, in a soft sky blue with navy stripes, has a structured swish to it. Wear it with the matching long-sleeved polo top for a laid-back twist on a dress.

Polo tops and dresses - as seen at Fendi, Chloe and Miu Miu - are a key trend for this summer.

Iris & Ink's sage-green polo dress with ivory trim is spun from soft merino wool; it's relaxed but elegant. And if it's taking you a while to adjust to wearing normal clothes again, you're not alone.

Wide-leg knitted trousers in a playful colour, with a stretchy weave, feel as comfy as joggers (hello elasticated waistband), but look smarter, especially if the knit is ribbed or pleated. A hem length that shows a bit of ankle feels right for spring, too. Warehouse does a great pink pair.

For extra pep, a Lurex knit with some metallic threads, such as L. K. Bennett's will catch those afternoon rays. Simply accessorise with an Aperol spritz.
