Pension Credit is a means-tested benefit which is intended to help people who have reached state pension age and are on a low income. The Department for Work and Pensions (DWP), who is responsible for paying this benefit, is urging people to check eligibility.

A fresh alert for people to check whether they qualify was issued today.

The verified DWP Twitter account posted a reminder about the ways to check eligibility.

The tweet read: "If you're over State Pension age, you may be eligible to get Pension Credit to help with living costs..."

The tweet went on to encourage people to "check your eligibility online," linking to the GOV.UK's Pension Credit page.

Alternatively, the DWP tweet directed people to call 0800 99 1234.

Pension Credit is separate from the state pension.

It can be claimed by eligible people, even if they have other income, savings or they own their own home.

It may also be that claiming Pension Credit opens up other forms of support.

The Government website states: "If you get Pension Credit you can also get other help, such as:

  • Housing Benefit if you rent the property you live in
  • Support for Mortgage Interest if you own the property you live in
  • Council Tax Reduction
  • A free TV licence if you're aged 75 or over
  • Help with NHS dental treatment, glasses and transport costs for hospital appointments
  • Help with your heating costs."

Furthermore, if a person gets the Guarantee Credit element of Pension Credit then they will automatically get Cold Weather Payments.

Furthermore, they will also be eligible to get help with NHS costs.

This includes help with prescriptions, dental treatment, glasses and transports costs for hospital appointments.

Recipients of Pension Credit who are aged 75 or older can also apply for a free TV licence.

There is a guide to Pension Credit eligibility on the Government website.

Additionally, it's possible to use the Pension Credit calculator to work out how much a person might be able to get.

The user of this GOV.UK service will need details of earnings, benefit and pensions, as well as savings and investments.

They will need the same details for their partner, if they have one.

The Government directs people to contact the Pension Service helpline if they're not sure whether they're eligible for extra amounts.
