© Provided by Washington Examiner A former nursing assistant who pleaded guilty to killing seven elderly patients at a Virginia Veterans Affairs medical facility was sentenced to life in prison Tuesday.
Reta Mays, 46, was sentenced to life in prison for all seven murders. She received 20 additional years for an eighth victim she attempted to kill.

She admitted to murdering seven veterans using insulin at the Louis A. Johnson VA Medical Center between July 2017 and June 2018. She pleaded guilty to assault and intent to murder the eighth victim.
The ages of the victims were between 81 and 96, serving in branches of the armed forces, including the Army, Navy, and Air Force during World War II and the wars in Korea and Vietnam.
"I know that there's no words that I can say that would alter the families' pain and comfort. I don't ask for forgiveness because I don't think I could forgive anyone for doing what I did," Mays said in court, USA Today reported.
U.S. District Judge Thomas Kleeh ordered Mays to pay over $172,000 in restitution to a group of family members related to the victims, Veterans Affairs, and several insurance companies, according to Law & Crime.
Kleeh called Mays "the worst kind" during a hearing Tuesday, adding, "You are the monster that no one sees coming."

Mays is not eligible for probation for the life sentences she was given.
