Mikel Arteta has urged owner Stan Kroenke to provide funds for his Arsenal rebuild to avoid him having to weaken the squad if he is forced to sell to buy.

Arsenal are facing a first season without European football since 1995-96 and are set for a big financial hit, hampering their possibilities in the transfer market.

They already have strengthening in central midfield, the left side of their attack and at left-back among their summer plans.

And there could be further reinforcements required depending on who leaves.

Arsenal are resigned to losing right-back Hector Bellerin this summer, while strikers Alexandre Lacazette and Eddie Nketiah are facing uncertain futures along with those out on loan such as Matteo Guendouzi, Lucas Torreira, Joe Willock and Ainsley Maitland-Niles.

Granit Xhaka and goalkeeper Bernd Leno are two more who could be allowed to leave to bring in much-needed cash.

Martin Odegaard, Dani Ceballos and Mat Ryan's loans will expire while David Luiz's contract is up at the end of the season.

Arteta said, though: 'Let's see what happens. It's difficult to predict that one but in general we wouldn't like to do that [sacrifice players] because we're only going to be stronger. I think is clear that if we want to improve the team we need some resources.'

Arsenal's poor season has prompted plenty of questions and soul searching at the Emirates.

Amid the criticism raining down on him, Arteta says he judges himself on whether he is getting the maximum out of his players. 'With the majority of them, yes,' he said.

But, appearing to suggest that for some of his players their maximum is not good enough, Arteta added: [We can make it all of them] by finding a different way to do it, challenging them again, putting somebody next to them to try to push them again.

'Some of them can get to a certain level and you cannot push any further. If you want to evolve that, it's not possible.

'The [level is the] one that we've shown because in 38 games it doesn't lie.'
