Rangers and Celtic Colts one season Lowland League promise is a Trojan Horse and must be ditched

There's an undignified hawking of Old Firm Colt sides afoot and it should be brought to a halt.

No sooner did lower league SPFL club reject a plan to invite Glasgow's big two into an enlarged 16 team division, we now have Lowland League interest in taking the £50,000 on offer to implement them into their fifth tier.

Cue the mutiny from ambitious clubs from the West of Scotland, East of Scotland and South of Scotland Football Leagues attempting to push their way up the pyramid now in place within our game.

They are stating a lack of sporting integrity and they are spot on.

All of these clubs with their noses out of joint, who have invested heavily in trying to become a player within the structure which offers a pipe dream of senior football, are railing against the proposals.

Floodlights have been installed, ground improvements carried out and committees moving heaven and earth in an attempt to grow while Celtic and Rangers B teams may get a free pass into the Lowland League and there's a few arguments being made for their inclusion which should be called out.

It's being proposed that Colt teams would be initially invited into the set-up for one season only. There's a Trojan Horse right there.

Then there's the selling of the plan by Lowland League chairman George Fraser who has gone the extra yard by suggesting there's a mental health aspect to all of this, it's about giving kids a platform to play apparently which they may not get elsewhere.

Clearly a nonsense, it would be far better if the case was made with a straight bat without going down the 'human aspect' road and admit it's all about the money.

As with all decisions taken within football these days, it's about the bigger picture of the business, financial benefit and the positive impact.

Having never met George and not knowing him from Adam, it's a disingenuous approach to convincing other clubs to get on board by making the pitch that it's about giving Old Firm youth kids a platform to play.

If you allow them to parachute into the fifth tier of Scottish football then it's all about the poppy, nothing more and nothing less.

It's a £50,000 old team to play against. And George, how's this for a double entendre.

When he was asked if he thought the plan would get the green light he said: "I'm probably shooting myself in the foot here but I would like to think that it has a fair chance.

"We don't want to see anyone suffer. We need to take out of the equation who they are playing for and who they are attached with.

"It doesn't matter what team they are playing with. We need to give a platform for these boys to play football more than anything."

Since when was it the Lowland League's job to facilitate the two richest clubs in the country to get games for their young players?

If memory serves, they opted out of the development league and should be playing in a Premiership reserve league based on the old successful model.

Just why the Old Firm Colt idea is being pushed around as a human interest consideration is baffling, it's all about the money and it's undignified to have them appearing like waifs and strays looking for somewhere to play next season.
