Police have sealed off a city centre pavement after human remains were found during building work for Britain's new high speed railway.

West Midlands Police cordoned off a short section of footpath on Sunday close to Birmingham's Curzon Street station development which is set to become a HS2 terminus.

The remains are though to have been there 'for some time', cops said.

The force said in a statement: 'We are investigating after human remains were found.

'It is believed the remains have been at the location for some time. Tests are being carried out to identify the victim and establish the cause of death.'

Anyone with information is urged to contact West Midlands Police.
