Lorraine Kelly's show has sparked complaints after it used a photo of the Himalayas illustrating how the lockdown had drastically reduced pollution - but it turned out to be photoshopped.

She discussed the pictures last month, amazed by how different the landscape looked before and after the lockdown, with the mountains on the horizon now visible, all the smog disappeared.

She was speaking to producer Mike Gunton, who created documentary The Year Earth Changed, when they discussed the striking images.

"We're seeing the Himalayas before and after. Before people in Pakistan couldn't see them," Lorraine said.

"You can see the split-screen there. That was before when it was just like smog basically, and then look at that, crystal-clear views. Remarkable isn't it?"

But viewers noticed the washing line was exactly the same right down to the items hanging on it, and realised something was amiss.

One tweeted: "How the earth changed in lockdown #lorraine this photo has the same exact washing on the line a year apart? Photoshopped I think?"

Another asked: "If those pictures of the smog and Himalayas are genuine, why are the two men in the bottom both there? If months apart, they wouldn't be in the exact same place?"

"Its the same picture photoshopped.. as you can clearly see from the same exact people in both bottom right hand corners," remarked a third.

An Ofcom spokesperson told Metro.co.uk that they had received 112 complaints about the episode since it aired.

ITV has responded to the complaints, explaining that they are an a animation and not intended to be a real photograph.

A spokesperson said: "The images that were used are taken directly from the David Attenborough documentary The Year the Earth Changed.

"The before and after was screen grabbed to show the difference, as it is shown via animation in the documentary."
