A John Lewis store has been covered in hundreds of heart-shaped love letters and notes from shoppers who are desperate for it not to close down.

The branch in Sheffield dates back 170 years - but it is one the company decided not to reopen when lockdown restrictions were lifted last month.

This particular store was one of eight branches that John Lewis earmarked for permanent closure, putting 1,465 jobs at risk.

It comes after the retailer posted a £517million loss for last year due to the coronavirus crisis.

John Lewis described its Sheffield shop as "financially challenged" even before coronavirus crippled the high street, and bosses are consulting on its permanent closure.

Since the announcement of its planned closure, almost 25,000 people have signed a petition to save the shop, which employs 299 staff.

The store was formerly Cole Brothers and was established in 1847.

According to This is Money, one note reads: "The very heart of Sheffield has been ripped out. Such lovely staff."

Another said: "I remember when my mum passed away I came here to buy candles and holders for her funeral.

"I was so upset and a lovely member of staff found a chair for me, sat me down and went off to find my candles."

A third, from a member of staff, read: "After nearly 39 years' service I am devastated that it's the end of an era.

"Love to all my colleagues past and present and thank you to all the customers that have supported us."

Other stores that John Lewis wants to close include four "At Home" stores in Ashford, Basingstoke, Chester and Tunbridge Wells and three department stores in Aberdeen, Peterborough and York.

At the time, the retailer said alternative roles will be provided for employees where possible.

Before the latest planned closures were announced, John Lewis had already unveiled 1,424 redundancies last year with another eight John Lewis stores not reopening to the public.

A further 1,500 head office job cuts were confirmed in November.

Bosses said the move is part of a five-year transformation plan to "return to sustainable profits by 2025".

It said the transformation would save the business £50million.

A message on the John Lewis site for its Sheffield store reads: "Despite the drive and determination of our Partners, some of our shops were financially challenged prior to the pandemic.

"Unfortunately we can no longer profitably sustain our larger John Lewis stores in some locations. As a result, we are not planning to reopen our Sheffield shop."
