A young SpongeBob Squarepants fan got into quite a sticky situation when he used his mother's credit card to order over $2,600 worth of popsicles themed after his favorite Nickelodeon cartoon character.
Noah Bryant, a 4-year-old who lives with his mom Jennifer in Brooklyn, allegedly logged into her Amazon account to make the sneaky sweet treat purchase. He made a bulk purchase of SpongeBob Squarepants popsicles that cost his mother nearly $3,000.
"[Noah] loves @spongebob sooo much that he managed to purchase $2,618.85 worth of SpongeBob popsicles from Amazon and had them sent to his Auntie's house," Jennifer's colleague Katie Schloss wrote on Instagram.
"In case you are wondering, that's 51 cases, containing 918 popsicles," she added.
While the purchase may seem adorable, it had some very real consequences for Jennifer, a working mom striving for her master's degree. Amazon refused to take back the purchase or issue a refund, and Jennifer could not afford to pay for the ice cream herself.
Schloss explained in her post that she became involved when she read about Jennifer's predicament in a private Facebook student group they are a part of. Both women are working towards their masters at the NYU Silver School of Social Work, and even took a class and participated in a group project together.
According to the subsequent GoFundMe page she created to help the family, Schloss wanted to help in any way she could after hearing about how Noah's massive purchase put a strain on family finances.
"Katie texted Jennifer to see if she could Venmo a contribution. Jennifer asked if Katie could set up a GoFundMe on her behalf, which was how this page was formed," the fundraiser notes explained.
After setting up the account on Monday, the goal was promptly reached on Tuesday.
"Thank you so much for your mind-blowing generosity and support," Jennifer wrote in an update on the page. "We are so grateful to have made back the $2618.85 in a mere 24 hours (!!!)."
Jennifer explained that any additional funds raised will go towards caring for Noah, who reportedly is diagnosed with Autism Spectrum Disorder (ASD).
"As a parent to a child living with ASD ... all additional donations will go towards Noah's education and additional supports. We cannot thank you enough. Truly," she wrote.
Viewers on Instagram and GoFundMe found Noah and his ice cream obsession to be adorable. "This story made me so happy. Enjoy the popsicles!" one donator wrote. "He's so precious!!!! Who wouldn't love a summer supply of SpongeBob popsicles??" an Instagram follower added.
Some empathized with Jennifer's predicament, citing instances of their own children making extravagant purchases.
"When my son was 5 he ordered Call of Duty and a few other games which added up to about $600," one parent wrote on Instagram. "I'm so thankful that PlayStation reimbursed me these children are highly intelligent!! Damn Noah."
Newsweek reached out to Schloss, but she did not immediately respond to requests for comment.
This Amazon purchase turned out much better for this family than it did for a 22-year-old. Back in 2019, a scammer conned the site out of $370,000 by filing for returns on expensive purchases and only sending back boxes filled with dirt.
