A huge fire ignited and tore through a scrapyard near London City Airport, with more than 70 firefighters battling the blaze overnight.

Around 150 tonnes of scrap metal burst into flames at the industrial plot in Silvertown, Newham, sending plumes of smoke into the night sky.

London Fire Brigade (LFB) sent ten fire engines to the east London site where firefighters fought the flames for almost nine hours.

Emergency control officers took 33 calls about the blaze but no injuries were reported.

Firefighters arrived at around 10.45pm and grappled with the flames until 7.30am this morning when the fire was finally under control.

A LFB Spokesperson said: "The fire caused a significant amount of smoke and residents in the area have been advised to keep their windows and doors shut."

Investigators are looking into what caused the incident.

LFB confirmed the fire is under control and it will be some time before they are able to determine a cause.

A spokesperson told the Evening Standard: "The fire is now under control. Our crews will be on scene for some time so it will be a while before our Fire Investigation team have determined a cause, if indeed they are able to."

LFB tweeted at 1.07am to say firefighters had been called to a fire at an industrial estate on Thames Road.

"Firefighters continue to tackle a fire at a scrap yard in #Newham where scrap metal is alight. There are no reports of any injuries, but the fire is causing a significant about of smoke," they said.
