For "some bizarre reason" the people who run the Oatlands Golf Club in Sydney have refused to have a memorial built for four children fatally killed in 2020, according to Sky News host Paul Murray.

The children were on a footpath next to the golf club when a drunk driver ploughed into them.

Despite pleas for the memorial, Oatlands Golf Club rejected the request, and the only thing they would accept was a "very small series of stones by the side of the road," according to Mr Murray.

"The heartlessness that has been on show from this golf club - despite the fact that they said that they were there to help in the early days - is a disgrace," he said.

In a statement from the general manager of Oatlands Golf Club, he said as of March 21 all the concepts submitted by Parramatta Council on behalf of the families were "well outside the scale of what had been communicated as appropriate".

The statement went on to stress the "responsibility to the club and its members", and said that "in light of there being no support from the families for a memorial" which the board deemed appropriate to take to the membership, the board "has decided to close negotiations".

Mr Murray said this is the "ultimate definition of tone-deaf".

"This is tone-deaf, dumb, and blind.

"It doesn't affect a single person playing a single round of golf, but it tears the hearts out of a family who already had their heart torn four times, that they have to keep fighting for this."
