Further Covid restrictions are expected to be relaxed from May 17, as the government's 'roadmap' out of lockdown continues into the final stages.

In just 12 days time, people in England will be able to meet up with friends and family indoors for the first time in almost six months.

The 'rule of six' - or two households - will be in place to limit the potential spread of the virus but, as the weather improves, outdoor gatherings will increase to a maximum of 30 people.

The government is also expected to update its guidance on social distancing, including hugging, "by no later than step three [May 17]".

For now however the official advice remains: "But until this point, people should continue to keep their distance from anyone not in their household or support bubble."

Hospitality

Another big change coming as England moves into step three of the roadmap is the further reopening of the hospitality sector, allowing people to sit indoors at pubs and restaurants.

There will be no curfew, nor any return to the days of ordering a scotch egg to pass as having a 'substantial meal' - but customers will still have to order, eat and drink while seated.

Other indoor businesses set to open up include cinemas, children's play areas, hotels, hostels and B&Bs, as well as indoor adult group sports and exercise classes.

Performances and sporting events

Following several pilot schemes, the government will also allow some larger performances and sporting events in indoor venues with a capacity of 1,000 people or half-full (whichever is a lower number).

At outdoor venues, capacities of 4,000 people or half-full (whichever is a lower number) will be allowed, while in the largest outdoor seated venues, up to 10,000 people will be able to attend (or a quarter-full, whichever is lower).

Up to 30 people will be able to attend weddings, receptions and wakes, as well as funerals. This limit will also apply to other types of "significant life events", including bar mitzvahs and christenings.

Foreign travel and UK staycations

With regards to travel, many more staycations will become available up from May 17 as hotels reopen.

And some international holidays are likely to be permitted with the Government set to introduce a new traffic lights system for travel abroad, with countries designated either 'green', 'amber' or 'red'. The initial lists are expected to be revealed on Friday and will be reviewed every three weeks, with 'green' countries mooted to include Portugal, Malta and Iceland.

The government will also complete its review of social distancing and other long-term measures, such as wearing a face mask, ahead of the final stage of lifting restrictions (step four) on June 21.

This will also potentially lead to updated guidance on working from home.

Step four, slated for June 21, ought to see the "removal of all legal limits on social contact" and the final reopening of premises, such as nightclubs.
