Fortnite made $9.1 billion in revenue over 2018 and 2019, according to documents revealed in the lawsuit between Epic Games and Apple. That number breaks up into $5.4 billion in 2018 and $3.7 billion in 2019, per The Verge.

Epic Games reported $5.5 billion in profits over the two-year period. Although it's not clear exactly how much of that came from Fortnite, the game forms the backbone of Epic's business. The company went on to make $5.1 billion in profit in 2020, even accounting for the deficit being run at the Epic Games Store.

Fortnite's revenue is hardly surprising when it can be accurate described as "the largest game in the world" in internal Epic documents from June 2020. It had around 80.4 million monthly active users and 350 million player accounts at the time. Epic doesn't often disclose active user numbers, but the company said it had 78.3 million monthly players in September 2018, indicating it managed to keep its players engaged and expand its business by a couple of million users.

Epic will need Fortnite's revenue to stay steady as it continues its crusades against the gatekeepers on both mobile and PC. Its lawsuit against Apple's forced 30% commission for in-app purchases on iOS and its battle with Steam for a place in the digital games distribution world are expensive endeavors in the short term, but if they pan out Epic will have significantly improved its position in both markets.
