Melbourne's leading goalkicker Bayley Fritsch will front the AFL tribunal to challenge his one-game suspension for striking.

The Demons forward was charged with striking North Melbourne young gun Tom Powell during Sunday's 30-point victory in Hobart and is set to miss Saturday night's AFL clash against Sydney at the MCG.

Match review officer Michael Christian assessed the second quarter incident, where Fritsch attempted to fend off Powell and caught him high, as careless conduct, medium impact and high contact, drawing the match suspension.

Fritsch will face the tribunal on Tuesday night to appeal the ban.

The 24-year-old booted six goals against the Kangaroos to increase his tally to 18 majors in Melbourne's 7-0 start to the year.

If the suspension stands it will be a huge blow to the Demons' prospects of maintaining their perfect record.

Melbourne have lost key defender Adam Tomlinson (ACL tear) for the season, while vice-captain Jack Viney will miss up to three weeks with a toe injury after being a late withdrawal against the Kangaroos.
