More than two months after she first went public with allegations she was raped by a colleague inside Parliament House, former Liberal staffer Brittany Higgins will sit down with the Prime Minister today in a face-to-face meeting.

Ms Higgins went public in February, alleging she was raped by a former colleague in a ministerial office in March 2019.

Her story added to a growing chorus of voices denouncing the treatment of women in politics and thrust an intense spotlight on the issue, so much so it led to the Prime Minister overhauling his Cabinet to ensure a focus on women's issues in every portfolio.

The meeting between Scott Morrison and Ms Higgins will take place this afternoon. She will also meet with Opposition Leader Anthony Albanese.

At the end of March Mr Morrison said he would be happy to meet with the former staffer, but that it was up to her to reach out to organise it.

Two weeks later the Prime Minister confirmed he would meet with Ms Higgins to discuss a "range of issues" that she had raised with his office, including the support given to her immediately after the alleged rape and whether his staff had "backgrounded" the media against her partner.

Backgrounding refers to the practice of briefing journalists with information that the source, including from a political office, does not want attributed to them.

But after it was announced the meeting would take place, Ms Higgins publicly expressed her disappointment at the time it was taking to arrange.

"While it's disappointing that I haven't heard from the Prime Minister's office since they initially made contact on the 6th of April - I'm hopeful the meeting will proceed," she said on Twitter.

"After two months, a national protest and countless other horrifying stories - the time for action is now."

Mr Morrison defended his office's handling of the meeting.

The man at the centre of Ms Higgins's allegations, , has not been charged with any crime.
