The nurse who took care of Olivia Newton-John through her harrowing cancer battle has died.

On Wednesday, the singer and actress, 72, shared a photo of herself and nurse Emma Cohen at the Olivia Newton-John Cancer Wellness & Research Centre in 2018.

'My heart is still in shock and so saddened to learn of the sudden loss of the very special Emma Cohen,' she wrote.

'Emma took care of me at a very vulnerable time in my life when I was a patient on her unit at the ONJ Cancer Centre in 2018.'

'She ensured my stay was safe and comfortable, always had practical advice for me, showed strong leadership skills and had a great sense of humour.'

Olivia continued: 'She was a bright, energetic and a powerful woman with a huge future ahead of her, and we connected on our mission to help patients on their cancer journey.'

'Emma had such a generous spirit and a warm and loving heart. I will miss seeing her lovely face at the Centre and send my love and deepest condolences to her friends and family.'

At the centre, patients are treated and breakthrough research and clinical trials are carried out.

Olivia, who was diagnosed with cancer in 2017 and twice before in 1992 and 2013, has spent years lobbying the Australian government to approve the use of medicinal cannabis for cancer patients.

In January last year, the Grease star gave fans a health update and revealed that her tumours were getting smaller.

She told The Sunday Telegraph that using medicinal cannabis and natural remedies in addition to conventional medicine had improved her health.

'My tumours are receding or they're going away or they're staying the same, on a Stage 4 metastatic breast cancer - that's pretty amazing,' she said.

'If I hadn't had the experience I'm having with cannabis I wouldn't be able to talk about it.'
