Australians have shared the 'petty' things they simply can't stand - including pineapples on pizza, baked beans, the sound of chewing gum and even their mother-in-laws.

One mum prompted an amusing discussion on social media after she asked: 'What is something a lot of people like, but you can't stand? I'll go first, pineapple on pizza. Enough said.'

Her post was quickly met with more than 4,400 responses from frustrated Aussies, with hundreds sharing their own infuriating pet peeves.

The most commonly mentioned irritants included food-related things such as pineapples on pizza, coriander, avocados, beans, oysters, celery and mushrooms.

What are some petty annoyances Australians have?

* People who don't wave in traffic to say thank you

* Pineapple on pizza

* Chewing, especially crunchy foods and chewing gum

* People who chew with their mouths open

* Shortened words like 'veggies' instead of vegetables

* Strong-smelling foods like bacon, corn chips and cheese

* People using their windscreen wipers to clean their windscreen and the water going onto the car behind

* People who cut into small spaces in front of you in traffic

* Family members not closing cereal boxes or containers properly so the food goes off

* Family members not putting dirty clothes in the laundry basket and leaving them on the top instead

*  People who answer the phone and tell you to 'hold on'

'Baked beans, any of the legume beans like red kidney, lentils etc. The texture makes me gag, which is a bugger as I would quite like to have nachos when I am out but the mince always has nasty beans in it, too many to work around,' one explained.

Another said: 'Pineapples do not belong on pizza,' while one man added: 'Pineapples in general! It's strange however, I used to like them but now for some unexplained reason I can't stand them - yuck.'

And another confessed: 'Coriander. I hate coriander. I absolutely hate coriander.'

'Mushrooms are gag worthy. And Truffle, it's an earthy flavour they say. Nah it tastes like dirt,' another added.

One woman said she couldn't stand the taste of pork, especially the crackling.

'I can eat a bit of roast pork if it has lots of apple sauce or gravy to disguise the pork flavour. To me it just tastes like an old pig yuck,' she said.

Others shared their everyday annoyances, which ranged from the word 'veggies' and their mother-in-law to anyone cracking their knuckles or chewing gum.

'I like to eat vegetables but I hate the word "veggies",' one woman wrote.

Many listed the 'smells' they couldn't handle, including bacon, basil, salmon, coconut, honey and cooked eggs.

'The smell of bacon. It makes me want to vomit,' one wrote, while another added: 'Coconuts, the smell, taste and texture - yuck.'

'Honey. The smell alone makes me want to vomit,' one said, while one woman revealed she hated the smell of basil, saying: 'It's so bad! I cried once when I had to eat a salad with fresh basil in it.'

Dozens of Aussies complained about cheese as well.

'Blue cheese and Parmesan. The latter smells like vomit to me,' one woman wrote, while another added: 'Anything with melting cheese in it or over it, makes me feel ill, too rich.'

Others mentioned driving gripes including windscreen wiper use while driving and people who refuse to give a 'thank you' wave.

'The gap I leave between me and the car in front isn't your space to turn into and brake,' one wrote.

'When driving in car, car in front of you washing the windscreen. Water splash on my windscreen. So annoying! Should do it before driving.'
