Sports Minister Richard Colbeck has played down the possibility of Australian cricketers and officials being allowed to travel straight home on a charter flight.
There are 36 Australian cricketers, coaches and commentators in India for the IPL, including leading Test players Steve Smith, Dave Warner and Pat Cummins.
Cricket Australia is looking at organising some sort of charter flight to get them out of the country while India tackles an escalating coronavirus catastrophe.
The federal government has suspended flights from India until at least mid-May to ease pressure on hotel quarantine.
Senator Colbeck played down the prospect of bending the inbound travel ban for cricketers.
"One of the reasons for the pause was to give our hotel quarantine a little bit of space because of the load we've seen out of India," he told ABC radio on Wednesday.
"We won't be making any decisions that impact on that, but there aren't any decisions that have been made yet with respect to the cricketers."
If the players and officials are not able to travel straight to Australia they may be forced to fly to another destination such as Europe to complete their quarantine before being allowed to return home.
Senator Colbeck said there were 10,000 Australian citizens and residents stranded in India, and the most vulnerable cases were being considered on an individual basis.
India's health system is under extreme pressure and oxygen supplies are rapidly being depleted as official case numbers rise by more than 300,000 per day, although the actual figures are believed to be much higher.
