Hollywood star Halle Berry is used to undergoing dramatic transformations for her movies, but this time she took it one step further as she debuted her new look on the Oscars 2021 red carpet. But sadly fans weren't impressed with her dedication to surprise, as they shared their opinions on her hair-do online, and they weren't all positive.

After the film star took to Instagram with a cryptic snap of chopped hair on the floor, it left much to the imagination of what she had done before her arrival on Oscar Sunday.

And soon enough, the brunette beauty graced the red carpet sporting a much shorter style to her mid-length hair we've become accustomed to.

While the presenters were amazed at her stunning new look, viewers weren't bowled over and took to Twitter to air their opinions.

"Omg it looks awful sadly," one admitted.

Another agreed: "The dress is cute but the hair..."

"Not the hair but she's so beautiful omg," a third commented.

"That hair aint it," said a fourth.

Someone else joked: "Omg, who's her hairstylist.... ***somebody's getting fired***"

"I love her but no," a sixth stated.

Another believed she was wearing a wig, as they complained: "They just threw that wig on her head!"

A confused fan wondered the same: "Please tell me this is a wig and not her real hair!"

Others however thought her new style was "edgy" and "stunning", complimenting her facial structure to be able to pull off such a bold look.

"I see the vision, she's iconic," one wrote.

A second exclaimed: "She never disappoints!"

Halle made history at the Oscars in 2002, becoming the first ever black woman to take home Best Actress for her performance in the 2001 romantic drama film Monster's Ball.

Recalling her big win 20 years ago ahead of this year's ceremony, she told USA Today: "It was one of these out-of-body experiences.

"I had really no real belief that I would win. Back at that time, the Golden Globe was the precursor for the Oscar and I didn't win the Golden Globe.

"So when my name got called, I really didn't have a speech. I didn't know what I was going to say. And my subconscious took over and I said what was on my spirit, what was on my heart."

During her Oscar speech, the actress was overcome with emotion and branded the moment "so much bigger" than her.

She dedicated her Oscar to "every nameless, faceless woman of colour that now has a chance."
