A 14-year-old boy has been charged with murder after a teenager in possession of an electric scooter was stabbed to death in east London.

Fares Maatou, 14, died after suffering knife wounds in the Canning Town area of Newham just before 4pm on Friday.

Despite the best efforts of the emergency services, he was pronounced dead around half an hour later.

A post-mortem examination held at East Ham Mortuary gave cause of death as stab injuries.

Four youths, have so far been arrested in connection with the killing and police confirmed that one boy, aged 14, had now been charged with murder and possession of an offensive weapon.

He is due to appear before Stratford Youth Court on Monday.

Two other boys, aged 15, have been bailed and a third 15-year-old remains in police custody.

Police have confirmed that the victim had been in possession of an electric scooter at the time of the attack, but have said they are retaining an open mind as to the motive.

DCI Perry Benton, Specialist Crime, thanked the local community for coming forward with information about the stabbing.

He said: "Every piece of information could be vital, so I continue to appeal for anyone who knows anything and any witnesses who have yet to speak with police to please come forward.

"I have assured Fares's family of my total commitment to bringing to justice those responsible for this senseless killing. They will be supported by specialist officers at every stage of what will be a terrible ordeal for them in the weeks, months and years ahead.

"This remains a fast-moving investigation and there will be further developments."

Police also said a crime scene remained in place and the public could expect to see an increased police presence in the area.
