A Nevada fugitive on the run for nearly 30 years was recaptured in Mexico and has since been extradited back to the United States.

The U.S. Marshals Service on Thursday announced agents arrested Samuel Gallardo, who was convicted of DUI causing death or serious bodily injury in the 1992 death of Gary Selby Jr. The 52-year-old was driving in the wrong direction when he slammed into Selby's vehicle, instantly killing the 18-year-old.

Gallardo was 27 at the time of the deadly crash, which also left several others seriously injured.

"Through the collaborative efforts of the Nevada Department of Corrections, Department of Homeland Security, the Mexican government, and the U.S. Marshals Service, Gallardo was brought to justice," according to a press release from the federal agency.

Samuel Gallardo was convicted of DUI causing death or serious bodily injury in 1992. He escaped custody in 1994 after serving less than one year of his 40-year sentence.

He was ordered to spend 40 years behind bars, but the inmate managed to escape in 1994 while he was out working with a fire crew, according to the Las Vegas Review-Journal. At the time, he'd served less than two years of his prison sentence.

Gallardo was found living in Nayarit, a city on Mexico's Pacific coast, in January 2020 and extradited on Wednesday to Nevada, where he has been ordered to serve out the remainder of his prison sentence with the state's Department of Corrections.

"He got comfortable and made some mistakes and we were able to capitalize on those mistakes," Michael Desh, an employee with the U.S. Marshals Service in Nevada.
