A rookie police constable convicted of being part of a banned neo-Nazi terrorist group has been sacked by the Met.

Benjamin Hannam, 22, was dismissed from the force following a misconduct hearing on Wednesday. The decision was taken by assistant commissioner Helen Ball.

Hannam was found guilty earlier this month of being a member of the illegal right-wing extremist organisation National Action (NA).

He is due to appear at the Old Bailey on April 30 for sentencing. Hannam did not attend the hearing at the Empress State Building in Earl's Court, west London.

His trial and the misconduct case heard Hannam lied on his application form and on a vetting form, denying links to an organisation "similar to the BNP".

Hannam had been working as a probationary officer for the Metropolitan Police for nearly two years before he was found on a leaked database of users of extreme right-wing forum Iron March.

He had signed up to the forum when he joined the London branch of neo-Nazi group NA in March 2016.

The officer, who has autism, said he was "desperate to impress" an older NA organiser who gave him free stickers and badges.

Hannam's association with NA ended before he began working for the Met and counter-terrorism officers acted "swiftly" once he had been identified as a suspect.

The ideology of NA was described in court as based on "Aryan purity" and hatred of non-white groups, particularly Jews.

Members venerated Adolf Hitler as a "divine figure" and celebrated violence, including war and genocide, the court heard.

Before dismissing Hannam from the Met, Ms Ball said: "He could be in no doubt what he was doing was unacceptable behaviour at every stage. It is therefore proven that this is gross misconduct."

"His rank of PC cannot be reduced so the only option is dismissal.

"He had every opportunity to move away from this course of conduct. I do not find any mitigating factors as his behaviour has been so grave."
