The Repair Shop presenter Jay Blades and goldsmith Richard Talman were thrilled when guest Michelle brought along her grandma's engagement ring to be restored on the BBC show. The guest opened up on the heartwarming love story of her grandparents before breaking down in tears when she caught sight of the piece restored to its formal glory.

Michelle explained: "It's an engagement ring, it belonged to my grandma. My grandma passed away in April this year, she was 99 years of age."

A gobsmacked Jay remarked: "[She was] 99! A proper legend then."

"When we had to clear out her house we were rummaging through her things and we found her engagement ring hidden away in a teapot," Michelle continued.

"Hold on, in a teapot?" Jay questioned and she said: "Yes in a little treasure chest.

"She and my grandad got engaged after the war, they got married in 1946.

"She was actually engaged to someone else and she was meant to meet her current fiancé at a local pub.

"So she went to the pub but she bumped into my grandad, fell in love, a bit of a whirlwind, called off the engagement with the other guy."

"Love at first sight," Jay remarked. "Wow, that is special, that is love."

"They stayed together until my grandfather passed away in 1991 but they adored each other," the guest shared.

"Without this none of us would be here, this is the start of the puzzle for us. I like to think when it's mended it's like they've gone full circle and reunited."

Jay commented: "That's true love as well, you can meet someone, love at first sight, everyone wishes for that.

"Tell us about the relationship between you and your gran."

"She is everything to me she was just so special," Michelle said as she broke down in tears. "So much fun, great sense of fun. I miss her terribly."

As he started work on restoring the item, Richard explained: "The first thing I need to do is give it a really good clean to find out how much of it can be saved."

Luckily, Richard was able to incorporate all of the ring's elements in the restoration.

When Michelle came to collect the ring, she revealed: "It means everything, it means so much. To have it back and mended and whatever's under there I can't wait to see."

Struggling to hold back tears, Michelle was overwhelmed when she set eyes on the special piece.

"That is beautiful," she said. "Wow, I'm sorry. That is so beautiful. Every Christmas when she would come and stay with us to exchange Christmas presents, whoever it was, she would always pick it up and kiss it.

"You might think I'm a bit strange but I'm just going to do that now. That's for you, gran. She would love this, I'm sure she's somewhere, I'm sure she's smiling."

"Having those two ends meet again is like my gran and my grandad meeting again," she added. "I can't wait to show everyone and continue to tell their love story because they adored each other."

The Repair Shop continues on BBC One on Wednesday at 8pm.
