Work continued on a building site far, far away on Wednesday as a not so futuristic set was methodically assembled for the next instalment in the Star Wars franchise.

Tucked away in a secure location in Essex, a large production team prepared the green screens upon which the film's CGI generated battle scenes will play out when spin-off Rogue Squadron goes on general release.

Offering a telling insight in what to expect from the new film - which has been slated for a Christmas Day 2023 launch - a series of battle weary spacecraft were seen being built around the sprawling set perimeter.

Crew were seen busily working on building a number of space ships for the shoot, with what appeared to be the top of a Y-wing Starfighter visible on one part of the site.

A larger space ship was also seen partially built with a battered silver and red livery on the cockpit, while rockets had also been placed on the location.

Patty Jenkins was unveiled as its director in December 2020, becoming the first woman to helm a Star Wars movie in the franchise's 44 year history.

Rogue Squadron will focus on the X-Wing Resistance fighter pilots featured prominently throughout the franchise, with Jenkins admitting she was keen to develop their story after growing up in an Air Force family.

Speaking at a Disney earnings presentation, she said: 'I love to move fast, and speed of any kind. I think that that's because I grew up the daughter of a great fighter pilot.

'And every day, I would wake up and go outside and look up, and see my father and his squadron taking off in their F-4s, whirring across the sky. And it was the most thrilling thing, still, I've experienced in my entire life.'

Jenkins' father William T Jenkins was an Air Force captain who earned a Silver Star in the Vietnam War and died during a NATO mock dogfight when she was seven years old.

She continued: 'So, when he lost his life in service to this country, it ignited a desire in me to turn all of that tragedy and thrill into one day making the greatest fighter pilot movie of all time. But try as I might, and look as I did, I couldn't find the right story ever.

'I kept looking and looking, but I just couldn't find the right one... until now. Now, I've found a movie about two things I love. So, I'm gonna see you very soon.'

In Star Wars canon, the Rogue Squadron were founded by Luke Skywalker and named after Jyn Erso's team of rebels who sacrificed themselves to get the plans for the Death Star during the Battle of Scarif, which was the focus of spin-off film Rogue One: A Star Wars story.

However, Patty previously revealed to IGN that her film will be a completely new and original story, and will also not be related to the Rogue Squadron video game.

While Patty was announced to direct the hotly-anticipated feature film no cast members have been revealed YET, and in typical Lucasfilm fashion details of the plot remains tightly under wraps.
