A note posted at a drive-thru by staff at McDonald's has gone viral as it pleaded with customers to treat them with respect as they tried to fulfil everyone's orders.

A video posted to TikTok by @BrittanyJade903 shows her waiting in line at a drive-thru in the US, where she spotted a note printed on yellow paper and stuck to the speaker box where visitors make their order.

The clip has been watched more than 1.2 million since it was posted at the weekend, with plenty of viewers saying they could relate to the message having experienced similar difficulties while working in other hospitality roles during Covid-19.

The sign reads: "We are short staffed. Please be patient with the staff that did show up. No one wants to work anymore."

It was captioned: "Ya'll, our McDonald's is savage AF" and gained more than a thousand comments as people empathised with what the staff were having to face, saying it "seems like that everywhere".

Some said their own companies are struggling to get staff during the pandemic, with one claiming: "They make more money staying home, why go back?"

A second said: "It's sad because it's true. We've been trying to hire people at our restaurant and no one wants to work."

A third replied: "My Dunkin' Donuts had a very similar sign today."

Another asked people to take heed of the message, saying: "So true. Don't get mad at the ones there working. They aren't the reason it's short staffed. They are working."

And someone else shared their own similar experience, adding: "We're so busy at my Starbucks that people are quitting... one girl got hired and walked out on the job because of how busy we are."
