As easy as it would have been for GMC to crank out a new SUV version of its Hummer EV Pickup with identical dimensions and a sealed cargo area stuffed with seats and carpeting, that's not the case. What the 2024 GMC Hummer EV SUV loses in ultimate utility to its bed-baring 2022 GMC Hummer EV Pickup sibling, it makes up for with greater maneuverability and superior off-road capability.
For GMC's Hummer EV SUV and Pickup, Size Matters
The biggest differences between the two new electric Hummers are their lengths; the Hummer EV SUV measures in at 196.8 inches in overall length, a full 20.0(!) inches shorter than the 216.8-inch-long 2022 Hummer EV Pickup. Wheelbase differs, too. The Hummer EV Pickup stretches 135.6 inches between its axles whereas the SUV has a 126.7-inch wheelbase.
The wheelbase difference helps explain the SUV's turning circle advantage (35.4 vs. 37.1 feet), and both vehicles shorten their turning circles with help from four-wheel steering which is standard on EV2X, EV3X, and Edition One trims and enables a nifty diagonal-travel CrabWalk mode. A shorter wheelbase will also aid the SUV's performance away from pavement, as described in the video above.

Look Out, Jeep Wrangler ... Seriously
Taking into account the Hummer EV SUV's significantly shorter wheelbase and 11.0-inch-shorter rear overhang (35.5 inches on the SUV compared to 46.5 inches on the Pickup), the SUV will be the stronger performer off-road.
Ground clearance, fording depth, and suspension travel are all effectively identical between the two, but look at the breakover and departure angles. The Pickup's 32.2-degree breakover angle is bested by the SUV's 34.4 degrees and the Pickup's 38.4-degree departure angle pales in comparison to the 49.0-degree departure angle of the SUV. (For what it's worth, the Pickup has a 0.1-degree approach angle advantage, for a maximum of 49.7 degrees.) Have no idea how any of these compare to non-Hummers? A four-door Jeep Wrangler Rubicon boasts a 22.6-degree breakover angle, a 43.9-degree approach angle, and a 37-inch departure angle-meaning the EV SUV shames that benchmark off-roader. Between the angles, however, you should keep in mind: The GMC Hummers are large-much larger than a Wrangler, so while their specs are impressive, they may be limited to trails wide enough for them.
So no, the 2024 Hummer EV SUV will not just be a bedless Hummer EV Pickup. Instead, it just might be the most capable electric off-roader on the market-and among the most capable factory off-road SUVs available, period.
