An aquatic centre in Sydney's south has been evacuated after a hydrochloric acid spill left children struggling to breathe.

About 150 people fled Hurstville Aquatic Centre at 10.15am on Easter Monday after a fault in the pool's storage system caused hydrochloric acid to leak.

Fire crews assisted five children and one adult who suffered breathing difficulties.

One of the kids and the adult were taken to hospital.

A Fire and Rescue NSW spokesman said firefighters found a fault with the storage of 'some strong acids used to decontaminate the pool'.

'Six people have been affected by the fumes. Firefighters immediately began to render first aid and there have been 150 people in total evacuated from the aquatic centre,' the spokesman said.

'We've also got hazmat crews on scene, and they'll be helping to resolve the incident.'

Fire crews are now working to ventilate the centre.
