Police on Monday said they were stymied as to why a 27-year-old man shot his parents to death, then fired at three random people in a convenience store - two fatally - and then set his apartment on fire before killing himself in the complex's parking lot.

Joshua Green had bought the gun legally in 2020, police said.

"As to why this occurred, we have no idea yet," Baltimore County Police Col. Andre Davis said at a news conference Monday morning, according to The Associated Press. "Our homicide detectives are tirelessly investigating a motive, but it appears that the shooter acted alone."

The first shooting report came in just before 7 a.m. Sunday at Royal Farms store in Essex, Maryland, when Green pulled into the parking lot and used his car to block in Alpha Elizabeth, 63, who had just parked outside the store and was sitting inside the vehicle, AP said.

Inside the store he fatally shot customer Silvester Day Jr., 44, near a cash register, then wounded a store employee, AP said.

That's when he returned home, set his apartment on fire and shot himself, leaving police to find the apartment engulfed in flames and Green dead in the parking lot.

When they went to his parents' home to inform them of their son's death, police found their bodies. Douglas Green, 58, and Olivia Green, 62, had been killed at their home in the town of Baldwin, The Baltimore Sun reported.
