A BASE jumper who leapt from the 23rd floor of a Florida hotel Sunday evening is dead, according to WMMB news in Panama City.

Timothy Ackerman reportedly plunged to his death at the Sunrise Beach Resort at 6:45 p.m. with a parachute strapped to his person. The 31-year-old man was found near a roadway, the report said. Earlier reports said Ackerman had leapt from the resort's 14th floor and his chute did not open.

BASE stands for "Building, Antenna, Span and Earth." The dangerous pastime of BASE jumping, according to Basejumper.com, refers to the "four categories relate to the types of exit points most typically used by base jumpers."

Florida authorities said there is nowhere in the Sunshine State where such activity is legal and that trespassing is a crime.
