Texas has recently lifted its statewide mask mandates, but some businesses still choose to enforce mask-wearing among their customers and staff. One such establishment, the Legends Diner in Denton, has gone a step further and decided to fine customers who question their continuing mask policy.

A notice on the door of the North Texas restaurant reads: "Our new surcharge [sic] $50 if I have to explain why masks are mandatory $75 if I have to hear why you disagree . . ."

According to Fox News, owners Wayne and Kat LaCombe explained that while the policy is mostly tongue-in-cheek and they haven't yet charged any non-compliant customers, they are willing to enforce the surcharge if need be. Many of the diner's patrons are elderly, the couple explains, and the policy is meant to protect both them and their business.

"I just can't afford to get the virus. We'd have to shut our business down," said Wayne LaCombe.

Legends Diner is just one of many independent and chain restaurants and retailers that have decided to keep the mask mandates past March 10. Fast-food giants McDonald's and Whataburger, and grocery chain Kroger are among them.
