Bristol City are reportedly close to signing free agent defender Danny Simpson on a contract until the end of the 2020/21 campaign, which has drawn a mixed reaction from fans of the Bs3 club.

Early last week Sheffield Wednesday emerged as potential suitors for Simpson, with City revealed as a potential landing spot a few days later.

Owls boss Darren Moore revealed yesterday that they would not be signing him and now it seems the 34-year-old is set to reunite with Nigel Pearson at Ashton Gate.

According to Gregor MacGregor from the Bristol Post, the defender - who has been a free agent since leaving Huddersfield Town in the summer - will be joining the Robins.

It is understood that the deal, which is close to being all tied up, will stretch only until the end of the season.

There is currently no space in City's 25-man Championship squad but it is believed that the South West club will approach the EFL to try and swap Simpson with one of their players suffering with a long-term injury - something there is a precedent for.

Simpson's impending arrival and the details of his deal have caused a stir among Robins supporters, many of whom have taken to Twitter to voice their thoughts.
