A Florida dog who survived a two-story fall last year will become a service animal for a military veteran.

The German shepherd puppy, whose survival earned her the nickname "Miracle" from her rescuers, will be placed in the home of an unnamed veteran in need of a service dog after County Court Judge Wesley Heidt granted Volusia County's custody petition.

"We're gratified that working with our law enforcement partners, we were able to intervene and protect Miracle from any further harm," Volusia County Animal Services Director Adam Leath said. "The teamwork between Animal Services and law enforcement around the county continues to be a true community partnership that's providing help and resources for our four-legged and two-legged companions alike."

On Dec. 14 of last year, police were called to a Motel 6 after receiving a report of a woman standing over the railing and threatening to jump, according to the county. When officers made contact with 35-year-old Allison Murphy, police said she picked up her dog and tossed her over the balcony.

The dog fell to the ground, landed on her feet, and ran away, county officials said. The dog, who escaped serious injury, was transported to a local animal hospital for medical treatment and subsequently placed with a foster family, the county added.

Volusia sheriff's deputies arrested Murphy, who was charged with animal cruelty and resisting an officer with violence. In an order signed by Heidt on March 5, Murphy was deemed either unable or unfit to provide adequately for the dog, barred from owning or possessing any animals for five years, and ordered to pay $1,127.24 for the cost of the examination and care of the dog since she was taken into police custody.
