Prince Harry has marked the UK's Mother's Day from across the pond, arranging for a floral tribute to be placed at Princess Diana's grave.

The Duke of Sussex had flowers placed at his late mother's resting place at the Spencer family's ancestral home, Althorp, on Sunday, a spokesperson has confirmed.

Princess Diana was buried at the Northamptonshire estate following her death in a car accident in Paris in 1997, when her youngest son was just 12.

Though Mother's Day is celebrated in May in the United States, Harry's new homeland, it falls on the fourth Sunday during the period of Lent in the UK.

Harry's brother Prince William also paid tribute to his mother, sharing homemade Mother's Day cards his three children had made for her.

Although Prince George, Princess Charlotte and Prince Louis sadly never had the chance to meet their 'Granny Diana', a post on Kensington Palace's Instagram revealed they made cards each year to remember her "for William".

"Dear Granny Diana, Happy happy Mother's Day. I love you very much and think of you always, sending lots of love from George xxx," Prince George wrote on his card.

Princess Charlotte said she was thinking of her late granny, adding, "Papa is missing you".

In their Instagram post, the Duke and Duchess of Cambridge acknowledged Mother's Day can be challenging "for those experiencing bereavement", something the prince knows only too well.

In a 2017 documentary marking the 20th anniversary of Diana's death, William said he and Kate "constantly" spoke about his mother around their children.

"It's hard because Catherine didn't know her, so she cannot provide that level of detail. So I do, regularly putting George and Charlotte to bed, talk about her and just try to remind them there were two grandmothers in their lives," he said.

"It's important that they know who she was and that she existed."

Prince Harry is yet to return to the UK following his resignation as a senior working royal alongside wife Meghan Markle.

However, the prince is expected to make a trip during the UK summer to unveil a new statue of Princess Diana at Kensington Palace with Prince William.
