The promotion race to get out of Sky Bet League One looks extremely competitive, and it looks like it could involve multiple teams.

Hull City find themselves leading the league following a brief blip last month, with four wins in a row taking Grant McCann's men back to the summit.

With Doncaster in fifth position having two games in hand on the teams above them, it looks like it's out of them, Sunderland, Lincoln, Peterborough and Hull for those two automatic promotion places, but then the play off race is even more intriguing.

There are just seven points splitting Portsmouth in sixth spot and Plymouth Argyle in 15th, and just two points between Pompey and Accrington Stanley in 10th.

One team in that mix is Ipswich Town, who have recently gone through a managerial change with Paul Cook replacing Paul Lambert at Portman Road.

The ex-Wigan manager's reign at the Suffolk club got off to a poor start with a 3-1 loss away to Gillingham, but they picked up a credible home draw this week against Lincoln.

There's no doubting that Ipswich have a talented squad, but they've been very inconsistent season and before Cook's arrival, their fanbase would not have expected to be in a battle for promotion.

Cook is under no illusions of the strength of the division, but he seems to be quietly confident of being in the promotion mix come the end of the season.

"This league is very competitive," Cook admitted, per the club's official Twitter account.

"We're one of the teams that have a chance, as others do as well, but I believe we can get in there."

The Verdict

It's good for Ipswich fans that they now have a manager who is providing different soundbites instead of seemingly the same old thing every week.

Despite Ipswich winning back-to-back games before Lambert's departure last week, the confidence levels of fans were still low, but it's funny what a change of personnel in the dugout can do.

Whilst Cook may not have picked up a win just yet, some of the players that he has at his disposal means that it won't be too far away, and they'll need to go on a good run of form between now and the end of the season to be in the top six in May.
