Conservative MP Sir David Amess expressed his admiration for the "great" monarch as news surrounding Meghan Markle and Prince Harry's interview with Oprah Winfrey continues to stir controversy. Addressing the Commons during a debate on the UK culture sector, Amess said: "Her Majesty the Queen is having a tough time at the moment.

"She's served her country so well for 70 years and a statue would be a fitting tribute to a great monarch."

The comments come as the royal family reels from the revelations unearthed by the historic interview.

Sir Amess added: "Her grace, compassion and dedication to duty during her reign has made this country the envy of the world.

"Thank goodness we have a monarch rather than a president."

In a statement on Tuesday, Buckingham Palace said the Royal Family was "saddened" to hear about the "challenging" past few years for Harry and Meghan revealed in the Winfrey interview.

Royal commentator Richard Fitzwilliams said he thought the Queen would be "distressed" at the remarks and described them as "an attack on the monarchy.

There are only a few statues of the Queen in the UK, the latest of which was unveiled in Gravesend, Kent in 2018.

In February, the Queen unveiled a statue in Southern Australia in a "virtual" ceremony.

The 94-year-old monarch cracked jokes with the Southern Premier Steven Marshall and Governor Hieu Van Le who informed the Queen that people feel "very close to you, through standing in front of this statue."

In response the Queen quipped: "Oh really?

"I would think possibly it might be quite alarming to suddenly see it out of the window.

"You'd think, 'Gracious, has she arrived here unexpectedly!'."
