Deputy Prime Minister Michael McCormack says thousands of jobs in the airline sector will be protected under the Morrison government's $1.2 billion aviation stimulus package.

The centrepiece feature of the bill includes 800,000 discounted airfares which will be available from April 1 and additional routes will be added to 13 tourism-reliant regions across the country.

Qantas and Virgin will also receive monthly retention payments to maintain aircraft and support more than 8,600 aviation staff.

Mr McCormack acknowledged there was a fiscal trade-off associated with the package but argued "you've got to spend money to make money".

"Yes we're adding to the debt, but we need to get the economy working," he told Sky News.
