The Duchess of Sussex sent an email to palace staff questioning why they could not "set the record straight" about an unflattering story written about her and the Duchess of Cambridge.

Meghan sent her request to palace staff asking for clarification but was ignored, according to Finding Freedom co-author Omid Scobie.

The email came about when Prince Harry was asked to co-sign a statement against an "offensive" newspaper report that claimed Prince William "constantly bullied" the Sussexes before their decision to step back as senior working royals.

"Well, if we're just throwing any statement out there now, then perhaps KP can finally set the record straight about me (not making Kate cry)," Meghan reportedly wrote in an email to a palace aide.

In a piece for Harpers Bazaar online, Scobie writes that Meghan was questioning why her side of the story was never considered important.

Meghan was told Kate, the Duchess of Cambridge, should not be linked to any such gossip, Scobie says.

During her interview with Oprah, Meghan gave her version of events about the incident, which took place soon before her royal wedding in May 2018.

At the time it was widely reported the Duchess of Cambridge burst into tears during a fitting for bridesmaid's dresses.

Her daughter, Princess Charlotte, was part of the bridal party.

It was claimed Meghan had caused Kate to break down over flower girl dresses.

Kate had given birth to her third child, Prince Louis, weeks before.

Meghan says it was Kate who made her cry, contrary to reports.

"The narrative with Kate, which didn't happen, that's when everything changed," the Duchess of Sussex told Oprah.

"It was the beginning of a real character assassination".

Oprah questioned why no one from the palace stepped in to clarify the media reporting, painting her as the instigator.

"You knew all along, everyone in the institution knew, why didn't they say something?" Oprah asked Meghan.

The duchess replied: "I'm not sharing that to be disparaging to her. I would hope she wanted that to be corrected."

Scobie says it was just one of several occasions where Meghan felt let down by The Firm.

Meghan told Oprah she was unable to leave her home, Frogmore Cottage, for several months because palace aides claimed she was "everywhere right now" in the media and that she needed to lay low until interest slowed down.

Even when her mother Doria Ragland came to visit in 2019, the duchess told her "you're stuck in here," according to a source, when Ragland discovered they couldn't go and get coffees in the nearby Windsor village.
