Holidaymakers keen to take advantage of a half-price flight scheme will not be able to travel intra-state or between capital cities, and some top destinations have been left out.

Among the popular tourist spots not accessible via the government's $1.2billion plan to boost the tourism sector are Byron Bay, Ningaloo Reef, Kakadu National Park, and the Barossa Valley.

Interstate tickets to 13 holiday hotspots will be subsidised by the federal government from April 1 until July 31 as part of the scheme.

But Australians looking to holiday in their own state will not be able to save money through the support package - and will instead need to pay full-price on tickets.

The bargain locations on offer are the Gold Coast, Cairns, the Whitsundays and Mackay region (including Proserpine and Hamilton Island), the Sunshine Coast, Lasseter and Alice Springs, Launceston, Devonport and Burnie, Broome, Avalon, Merimbula, and Kangaroo Island.

This means holidaymakers living in cities like Sydney and Brisbane will not be able to make the most of the sale by travelling to other capitals.

The discount does however include Avalon Airport, which is located outside of Melbourne's metropolitan area.

The same goes for visitors to Western Australia's World Heritage listed Ningaloo coast, South Australia's Barossa Valley and Kakadu National Park in the Northern Territory, none of which have discounted flights which land nearby.

Queenslanders looking to visit the Whitsundays, Hamilton Island, Cairns, the Gold Coast and Sunshine Coast will not be able to enjoy the bargain airfares as they are travelling to and from their own state.

But the scheme is expected to evolve to match demand in the coming months and the government could move to discount intra-state journeys.

There will be no limit on the number of tickets available but the government expects an average of 46,000 people per week - a total of about 800,000 - will fly on the subsidised flights.

The areas involved have been chosen because they rely on tourism for their wealth and are particularly dependent on aviation for their visitor numbers.

The scheme is part of a huge bail-out package for the tourism sector which employs 611,000 Australians and has been crippled by the Covid-induced international border shutdown.

To get the half-price tickets, Australians simply need to head to the Qantas, Jetstar or Virgin websites after April 1 and they will see the dramatically reduced fares.
