GE Renewable Energy has confirmed plans to build a new offshore wind turbine blade factory at Teesworks industrial site next to the coast.

In a £142m deal, the factory will open in 2023 supplying offshore wind turbine blades to the Dogger Bank Wind Farm being built by SSE and Equinor and the North Sea.

The plant will be operated by Danish subsidiary and wind turbine maker LM Wind Power and create over 2,000 jobs. It comes after Rishi Sunak announced in the Budget last week that Teesside would become the UK's largest freeport.

The Government also announced it will spend £20m to improve port infrastructure in Teesside and £75m to do the same at the Able Marine Energy Park in Humberside, helping GE and other offshore wind players.

It says the £95m investment will create 6,000 jobs and provide space for seven manufacturers making offshore wind equipment.

Prime Minister Boris Johnson said: "During the Industrial Revolution over 200 years ago, wind powered the sails of ships from the Humber and Teesside trading goods around the world.

"Now the Humber and Teesside will put the wind in the sails of our new green industrial revolution, building the next generation of offshore wind turbines whilst creating 6,000 new green jobs in the process."
