The 2021 census is underway, with households across England, Wales and Northern Ireland due to be surveyed on everything from living situations and lifestyle to employment and health, providing a snapshot of how we all live. The census takes place every 10 years, with the last survey taking place in 2011.

How do I fill out the census?

It should take about 10 minutes to fill out in total.

You can fill out the census online or via a paper form, which will be posted to you.

It needs to be filled out by March 21 - which is Census Day.

What should I do if I haven't received my census letter?

If you haven't received your letter and you live in England or Wales, don't panic - you can complete the form online.

You can request an online access code via the census.gov.uk website and fill it out there.

You also will not have a received a letter if you live in Scotland - the Scottish census takes place next year in 2022.

Do I need to fill out the census?

Yes you do - but you don't have to answer all of the questions.

The Census Act 1920 makes it compulsory for everyone in England and Wales to participate.

Questions about sexual orientation, gender and religion are all voluntary.

The form indicates which questions are mandatory and which are not.

It is against the law to ignore a census, and you can be fined up to £1,000 if you do not participate, or give false information.

In late March and early April, census field officers may visit your household if you don't submit a form.

Their job is to encourage you to complete it and show you how to get further help if you need it.

Why is the census important?

The census gives the Government and local authorities a picture of all the people and households.

It helps make decisions on Government policy and funding public services, such as transport, education and healthcare.

Every person in a household must either answer the questions for everyone living there, or make sure each person answers their own.
