Actor Wendell Pierce has slammed his former co-star Meghan Markle's decision to release her tell-all interview while the world continues to fight the coronavirus pandemic.

The 57-year-old said the former royals' interview was "insignificant" in a time the world is in the "throes of death".

Wendell, who played the father of Meghan's character in Suits for four years, told radio station LBC: "Today 3,000 people are going to die in America from Covid.

"A couple of hundred people are going to die, even this hour, in the UK."

He added that the pair's interview with Oprah Winfrey evoked Shakespeare's phrase "full of sound and fury signifying nothing".

"It was quite insensitive and offensive that we are all complicit in this sort of palace. gossip in the midst of so much death. I think it is insignificant," he continued.

And his scathing comments didn't just stop at the feet of the Duke and Duchess of Sussex.

The New Orleans native blamed "everyone" in his criticism, including Oprah, US network CBS, ITV and the Palace in his views.

Wendell, who has also starred in hit gangster drama The Wire, said that he hadn't spoken to Meghan since 2019.

He commented that during their time filming the law drama, the pair rarely spoke about race, despite the topic being featured in the series.

He said: "We didn't have long discussions about it, besides what was in the script and what was happening in our personal lives."

The topic was a huge talking point in Meghan and Harry's explosive interview with the 39-year-old telling Oprah that a member of the royal family had questioned what colour her son Archie's skin would be.

The Palace has since responded to the claims, with the Queen set to talk to senior figures of the family "privately" about the subject.

The Palace's short statement following the interview said: "The whole family is saddened to learn the full extent of how challenging the last few years have been for Harry and Meghan."

It continued: "The issues raised, particularly that of race, are concerning," before saying the matter will be dealt with privately.
