Victorian Premier Daniel Andrews will be in hospital for some time after a nasty fall yesterday morning.

Here's what we know.

What happened?

The Premier had been staying in holiday accommodation on the Mornington Peninsula for a weekend break when the accident happened.

"Early [Tuesday] morning, I was admitted to hospital after slipping and falling on wet and slippery stairs," he said in a statement.

"A CT scan has revealed several broken ribs and vertebrae damage, and subsequent medical advice has recommended I remain in intensive care for the next few days."

The fall happened as he was preparing for work in the morning.

How serious is it?

The ABC understands the Premier has fractured his T7 vertebrae in his mid back.

A decision will be made on whether he needs to have spinal surgery today.

The Victorian Government is expected to provide an update later.

Where is he?

Mr Andrews was initially admitted to the Peninsula Private Hospital.

Following an MRI, he was transferred to the Alfred Hospital's specialist trauma centre last night.

"This is a precautionary measure to ensure he has the most appropriate care available given the nature of his injuries," a spokesperson for the Premier said.

A date for when he'll be released from hospital has not yet been announced.

Who is filling in for Daniel Andrews?

Deputy Premier James Merlino, who also holds the education and mental health portfolios, will act in the top job while Mr Andrews is away.

Yesterday, Mr Merlino said the Premier did not have any head injuries, and would be back at work "very shortly".

What about Parliament next week?

Victoria's Parliament next sits on March 16.

The ABC understands that due to the seriousness of the injuries, Mr Andrews is expected to be away for more than a week.

Mr Andrews is an MP in the Lower House, where Labor holds 55 of the 88 seats.

The Premier's office has been asked if any plans are in place if Mr Andrews is still away next week.

Who else is out of action?

Victoria's Police and Emergency Services Minister Lisa Neville is also away on medical leave at the moment, and isn't expected back until May.

Ms Neville was admitted to hospital last month due to complications associated with Crohn's disease, a condition she has been living with for 32 years.

She said she had successfully managed the condition throughout her life, but a recent episode meant she needed time off to recover.

"The clear advice from my doctors is if I don't take this period of rest and recovery, I will be faced with major bowel surgery and risk long term consequences to the quality and length of my life," she said in a statement dated February 20.

"I am working with my doctors on my recovery and will be guided by their advice on when my physical health can allow me to return to work, which at this stage they believe will be in three months time."
