Prince Harry said he felt "trapped" by life as a member of Britain's royal family.
"I didn't see a way out. I was trapped, but I didn't know I was trapped," the duke of Sussex said during a bombshell interview with Oprah Winfrey that aired Sunday on CBS.
A seemingly incredulous Winfrey responded, "Please explain you - Prince Harry, raised in a palace and a life of privilege, and literally a prince - how you were trapped."
"Trapped within the system, like the rest of my family are," he replied.
The sixth in line to the British throne, sitting alongside his wife, Meghan Markle, the duchess of Sussex, told Winfrey of Prince Charles and Prince William, "My father and my brother, they are trapped."
"They don't get to leave. And I have huge compassion for that," said the 36-year-old prince.
Prince Harry and Markle officially informed Queen Elizabeth II that they wouldn't be returning as working members of the royal family, Buckingham Palace announced last month. The pair moved to California with their young son, Archie, in December 2020.
Asked if she was responsible for their departure to her home state - in a move dubbed "Megxit" by the media - and to respond to rumors she had planned the move all along, Markle said, "Can you imagine how little sense that makes?"
"I left my career, my life, I left everything because I love him," Markle told Winfrey. "Our plan was to do this forever."
Prince Harry said he wouldn't have made the move had he not met his wife. The couple married in 2018.
"I wouldn't have been able to because I myself was trapped as well," he said. "But the moment I met Meg and then our worlds sort of collided in the most amazing of ways."
