Who will get the $1,400 stimulus checks
Fewer people would be eligible for the next round of stimulus checks under the latest COVID-19 relief bill on the table in Washington D.C.
According to a report by CBS News on Thursday, this comes after a handful of moderate Democrats in the Senate claimed the $1,400 checks were going to people who earned too much money.
Under the new deal, individuals making $80,000 a year or less, and married couples making $160,000 or less would receive the payment this round.
Under the previous plan released by House Democrats, individuals earning less than $75,000 would receive $1,400 and couples earning less than $150,000 would have qualified.
The liberal Institute on Taxation and Economic Policy (ITEP) estimates that the pared-down Senate eligibility levels means 280 million adults and children would receive stimulus checks, compared to 297 million people under the House plan.
This comes after President Joe Biden last month unveiled his proposed "American Rescue Plan" - which called for hundreds of billions of dollars going to vaccination programs, $1,400 direct aid payments to most Americans, expanded unemployment insurance, more money for state and local governments, help with school reopenings and more.
The $1,400 is meant to go along with the $600 payments issued though the stimulus bill passed in December, which many claimed were much too small to do much good, for a total of $2,000 per person.
As far when Americans should expect to receive their payments, there is no timeline just yet. The new round would not go out until after Congress passes its broad relief package, which will take more haggling; and, as a result, more time.
