Prince Philip has been transferred between hospitals again.

Buckingham Palace announced just after midday on Friday (11.31pm AEDT) the Duke of Edinburgh had been taken back to King Edward VII Hospital in central London to continue treatment.

"The Duke is expected to remain in hospital for continuing treatment for a number of days," the palace said in the statement.

The news comes after the 99-year-old underwent a procedure at St Bartholomew's Hospital on Wednesday for a pre-existing heart condition.

Prince Philip was first taken to King Edward VII Hospital 18 days ago as a "precautionary measure" after "feeling unwell".

The palace later revealed that the Queen's husband was being treated for an infection.

However, after almost two weeks of treatment, the Duke was transferred on Monday to St Bartholomew's - a specialist hospital in cardiac care - where he later underwent the undisclosed procedure.

While Prince Philip has had a number of health battles in recent years, this current stint has become his longest hospital stay ever.
