Nationals Senator Matt Canavan says increasing the thermal coal market in India is a goal but needs to be done "one step at a time" in terms of trade agreements.

"We only capture five per cent of the thermal coal market in India, Indonesia gets about 60 per cent, and there's really high quality coal here, as India gets richer and has more means to buy high quality products they will probably increasingly turn to the high quality coals that we have here in Australia," he told Sky News host Peta Credlin.

Mr Canavan said any trade agreement with India would most likely not be the most advantageous for Australia but suggested entering an agreement such as an early harvest agreement to try and remove tariffs off Australian imports.

"We've got to be realistic with India which is a country that's still growing in the free trade world."
