Former Newsnight presenter Jeremy Paxman has said the BBC is full of "boring people" doing "dull" jobs.

Paxman, who now hosts BBC2's University Challenge, claimed "any fool" could read the news and berated reporters more interested in being on television than "letting the story tell itself."

He also took the opportunity to have a dig at actors, calling their profession "completely unimportant."

Speaking to comedian, Richard Herring, on Twitch, he said: "I think you have to decide 'would the world be a better place if the BBC didn't exist' and I think I come down on the side of the world would not be a better place if the BBC didn't exist, but it is an immensely frustrating organisation.

"It's full of boring people doing dull jobs and pretending they're important."

The 70-year-old, who previously presented the Six O'clock News, said he sees no point in newsreaders' roles and compared working from an autocue to schoolchildren learning to read.

During his career Paxman reported from Beirut and Uganda, but said he had little time for war correspondents who put themselves at the centre of their coverage.

The semi-retired presenter has spoken out on his dislike for presenters in the past and in 2014 infamously compared Huw Edwards, 59, to "some evangelical preacher on a wet Sunday morning in Merthyr Tydfil".
