New South Wales Environment Minister Matt Kean lectures people to follow the experts and listen to the science, and yet he is "doing the opposite" with his ambitious koala policy, according to Sky News host Alan Jones.

Mr Kean has announced his decision to set the ambitious target to double the koala population of New South Wales.

According to Mr Jones, the environment minister took it upon himself to make this target "despite receiving expert advice to the contrary".

He said an email obtained by the NSW Labor Opposition shows a Senior Research Manager at the University of Sydney advised the government to not set a koala number target.

Carolyn Hogg wrote, "Please do not under any circumstances give a number that we shall achieve. I have seen this done with a range of other species across the nation".

She went on to say "management teams find themselves having to make sub-standard decisions for the species to meet an arbitrary number someone made up."

Mr Jones said Mr Kean's decision to purse the goal in spite of this information shows he "thinks he knows more than a Sydney University senior research manager".

"This bloke obviously doesn't want to fight the Greens, he wants to join them," he said.

"He's a joke."
