After a challenging winter, clerk of the course Simon Claisse is relieved that the rain has relented and it's all systems go for this year's Cheltenham Festival.

The track lost both its January meetings due to waterlogged ground, for the first time since 1996 - but conditions have improved significantly in recent weeks.

Claisse suggests the ground on the opening day of the flagship meeting will be primarily good to soft.

"The old course which is the one we use on Tuesday, Wednesday and cross country are currently good to soft, soft in places. And the new course too, Thursday, Friday - good to soft, soft in places," he said.

"It's sort of where we would like to be with 13 days to go before we start racing."

Claisse said the weather forecast suggests the dry spell will continue until the early part of next week, followed by a spell of rain.

He anticipates a dry weekend before the Festival at this stage.

"It's a dry and murky morning here at Prestbury Park, but what a relief after such a wet winter that we have actually had eight dry days I think, which has helped the groundstaff out enormously in terms of preparations," he said.

"I think it was only about two and a bit weeks ago we could get on the tracks to start the work to set the courses up for the Festival.

"We really have had unprecedented rainfall over the winter and in particular over that Christmas period that sadly saw us lose the 1st January and again at the end of the month, when the course was flooded three times across probably less than 24, 25 days, something that I've never seen here in 20 years.

"But as I say, things are improving, the track is looking in great nick. Jonjo (O'Neill) had a walk round on Saturday and sent me a text saying how fantastic he thought it looked and maybe we should be hoping for some rain in a week or so's time, which is ironic in a way."

He added: "As things currently stand I have a good sense that we are going to start with good to soft and something in places, whether it's good in places or soft in places."
