Country music legend Dolly Parton has called out "cowards" who refuse to get a coronavirus vaccine as she received her first dose of the Moderna jab that she helped to fund.

After writing 'Jolene' and 'I Will Always Love You' on the same day, Parton had already stake a claim to being one of history's greatest heroes and she went even further last year when it was revealed that she donated $1m to scientists working on Covid research.

The donation from the Dolly Parton Covid-19 Research Fund went to Vanderbilt University medical centre in Nashville, Tennessee, which worked on the Moderna vaccine trials.

On Tuesday, the singer received her first dose of the jab and encouraged others to join her in getting inoculated.

"I'm old enough to get it and I'm smart enough to get it," Parton said.

"I'm trying to be funny now, but I'm dead serious about the vaccine. I think we all want to get back to normal, whatever that is. And that would be a great shot in the arm, wouldn't it, if we could get back to that?"

And she had a special message for anti-vaxxers, adding: "I just want to say to all of you cowards out there - don't be such a chicken squat. Get out there and get your shot."

She even reworked one of her most famous songs to match the moment...

Some users noticed that Parton had come dressed for the occasion, with a vaccination-ready sweater that meant she didn't have to roll up her sleave for the jab:

But mostly, people were just taking time to appreciate America's 10x Grammy-winning, multi-platinum-selling public health queen.
